In a recent announcement, Disney Cruise Line said that it would be postpone sailings until April or May. While the Disney announcement was met with both anticipation and concern, a bigger question remains unanswered: Will cruise lines be stuck in port through the summer 2021?
Popular travel writer The Points Guy has a complete list of cruise lines and their potential next embarking dates. Basically, the majority of well-known companies have an anticipated return of late spring, early summer of 2021.
While many people might long for that flotilla of fun, there is some trepidation with that great escape.
Although many hotels have learned to navigate the current health crisis, a cruise ship is a different entity. Long before COVID-19 was part of daily conversation, cruise ships had certain health and safety protocols. Considering that these ships are almost like floating cities, with large numbers of guests in relatively tight quarters, keeping guests from passing germs to one another is huge concern.
Are the waters still too volatile for cruise lines?
Even as many people have learned the importance of personal space, face coverings and hand washing, a trip on a cruise ship would entail more than those simple measures. While prevention is key, stopping the spread is a huge concern. No one wants to hear the stories of passengers stranded at sea due to an outbreak.
As areas start to reduce restrictions and create adaptive solutions, the possibility of that next cruise vacation seems to be on the horizon, Although some travel industry experts consider the possibility of requiring vaccinations for travel, one guiding principle seems to be the driver. People want and need to feel safe.
Beyond the health and safety concerns, there is another issue looking for the cruise lines. Can they really weather this financial storm? After a year of just going in and out of port, ships can have wear and tear.
In addition, many companies had to postpone huge launches. From the new Virgin Scarlet Lady inĀ Miami to the Carnival Cruise Mardi Gras and its first roller coaster at sea Bolt, these highly anticipated debuts are still pending. For the companies, the hope is that the excitement over the unique offerings will still have travel enthusiasts lining up to step into that cabin.
For the time being, Disney Cruise Line and many other companies are looking to set sail by this year. While many people look forward to that summer at sea, hopefully the fall is full of calm sailing weather.
Would you travel on a cruise line soon? What would make you more comfortable to get on a cruise ship?
