So how does Azkaban actually work in the Harry Potter series?
Dementors are feared beings and yet Harry Potter characters sure do get out of Azkaban frequently so what’s the deal with the feared prison from the series?
So we know about Azkaban because Sirius Black escaped the dementors but it brings up an important question about the Harry Potter series as a whole: How does Azkaban work? From what we know, the dementors are there to keep prisoners in but for being such an important part of the wizarding world, they’re not that great at their job.
Plus, Azkaban seems to have no real rules. Just basically if the wizards think someone is guilty, in they go. Sirius Black was framed for the murder of his friends and yet somehow it wasn’t easy to figure out that it wasn’t him? And why were no other Death Eaters taken to prison then? Since so many of them did even worse than selling out their friends?
Azkaban seems like the kind of place that you wouldn’t want to be anywhere near but also somewhere you could get out to easily if you tried. Which doesn’t really make sense.
Maybe it used to be something else, something better. And then as time went on and the dementors turned to Voldemort, it shifted. Or maybe it was always this way and it just somehow worked until Sirius Black and Bellatrix Lestrange escaped. Whatever the case is, it’s weird to read the series and experience the fear of the dementors to know that they’re seemingly bad at their jobs.
