Disney film to inspire you: Soul

Soul, which just came out at the beginning of this year, is a unique Disney film. Although Disney animated films are geared towards children, this Disney film seems to be more for adults than other films.  This movie gets viewers thinking about their lives as if death is around the corner, a thought most children don’t consider at their point in life.

Soul follows a man named Joe who finally reached his goal of becoming a real musician. He got the opportunity to be part of a famous musician’s band and to perform that night. That same day, Joe fell into a pothole and died. He turned into a soul and ended up in the afterlife, which is a conveyor belt with other souls moving closer to the light. Through trying to escape his faith, he ended up in the Before Time. He then pretended to be a mentor, a selected group of souls that help young souls find their spark before they start their lives on Earth. Their spark gives them a passion to live for.

Joe’s mentee 22 is a young soul that had multiple mentors but never found her spark.  She had tried everything and still had no desire to go to Earth. Joe gets the idea that he can help 22 find her spark and then take her Earth pass to go to earth to return in time for his show.

When Joe tried to escape the Before Time, he and 22 fell to earth in different bodies. Joe ended up in his cat’s body and 22 ended up in Joe’s body. Joe got to see his life through 22’s eyes and learned that his life is amazing.  22 got her spark from experiencing the little things in Joe’s life.

The leaves, a slice of pizza, a conversation in a barbershop, the love of his mother, etc.  Joe made it in time to play in the band, in his own body, but he realizes it didn’t fulfill him like he thought it would. Playing music being something he was born to do didn’t feel completely true. There were other things in his life that caused joy, probably being a person that inspires others in their music journey.

Soul teaches us that our drive to follow our dreams helps us become who we are, but achieving or not achieving our dreams is not the most important thing in our lives. Treasure the little things and the love from others. Being on a hyper-focused track to achieve your dreams can blind you to what’s around you. Soul shows us what’s important in life.  Adulthood has so many responsibilities and expectations from ourselves and others, we forget about the beauty around us. This reminder from Soul is truly valuable.
