5 Disney movies that will inspire viewers of every age to follow their dreams
Disney film to inspire you: Pocahontas
Although Pocahontas is quite problematic in its retelling of history, there are life lessons to be had throughout the film. Pocahontas is about a free-spirited princess, trying to find her life’s path. Pocahontas’ father wanted her to marry, but she was not in love with the man. She ended up falling in love with John Smith, who came to her village with other British settlers in search of gold. She fought for their love and the peace between her people and the British.
In a conversation with Grandmother Willow, a talking willow tree, Pocahontas learned an important lesson on how to find her path. Grandmother Willow sang to Pocahontas, telling her to listen to her heart, and then she will be able to understand. During the song, a frequent symbolic moment happened: a wind with leaves blew towards Pocahontas and surrounded her. This image came up in the movie whenever the wind was talking to Pocahontas and was leading her to the next focus on her path of life.
It’s common for people to think life has to be a linear process with clear steps, and obligations we must accomplish. Pocahontas shows us that as long as we follow our heart, the voice guiding us, we will find our way.
