With a plethora of incredible moments in the Harry Potter series, here are the top 5 most underrated heart-stopping scenes.

The word ‘heart-stopping’ isn’t unfamiliar when it comes to the world of Harry Potter.  There are dozens, if not more, heart-stopping moments that have made all of our hearts stop, and a gasp leave our lips. We all know the common, still jaw-dropping moments that no matter how many times you watch the movies or read the books you have to pause to shake your head. Those will not be these moments. We all love them, but we know them. These heart-stopping moments were compiled with one thing in mind: underrated.

The first and second underrated moments of the series involve the great, and beloved, Sirius Black. In Order of the Phoenix, during the battle in the Department of Mysteries, when Sirius and Harry are battling side by side, there’s a moment, in the midst of battle, where Sirius compliments Harry by saying, “nice one, James,” and that is a shut your eyes, and hold your tears back moment.

That’s unfortunately followed with Sirius Black being murdered right in front of his godson, and Harry ending up inside Dumbledores office where he’s overcome with grief. Dumbledore does not stop him from trashing his office, and that’s what makes it a heart-stopping moment. He knows that Harry needs to let it out, needs to finally grieve for once, and he allows him to do just that. This did not make the movie, however, which makes this a book-specific scene that goes completely under-talked about and underrated.

The third underrated moment involves the very controversial Servius Snape. The heart-stopping moment comes in tandem with his tears taking us back to the past, back to the scene of Snape holding Lily’s limp body.  The raw tears streaming down his face, him rocking her back and forth, crying over a love that is now gone forever is something that is hard to get over. Also, his Patronus. His Patronus!  The ‘Always’ scene will forever be underrated as well.

The fourth heart-stopping moment comes from one of the hardest deaths in the entire series: Dumbledore’s. It’s not his death specifically (we all know how heart crushing that was) but the scene that happens after. It follows one of his most famous quotes, “happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if only one remembers to turn on the light,” with the students and professors holding up their wands and turning on the light. They not only honor one of the greatest headmasters of all time, but they do it by bringing life, and light, to his words.

The fifth, and final moment, maybe the most heart-stopping moments of them all. Deathly Hallows Part 2. McGonagall and Molly race outside to protect the school from the impending attack by the Death Eaters. McGonagall uses the spell “Piertotum Locomotor!”, and the statues come dropping down to, in her own words, “man the boundaries’ and do their duty to protect the school because Hogwarts is threatened. This scene is so heart-stopping, so chilling. This is the moment where things get real.

Even now, decades later, each and every one of these scenes and moments are heart-stopping and world-shaping. They are not talked about enough and should be for they are essential to the Harry Potter series and the feels. Let’s take these underrated moments and bring them to the light.
