Ethan Hawke signs on to Marvel’s Moon Knight in as-yet unannounced role

Marvel Studios continues to land some of the biggest names in show business as Ethan Hawke signs onto the upcoming Disney+ series Moon Knight. Though Hawke’s role hasn’t officially been announced, there is talk that he’ll join the show as a villain.

Moon Knight is in the very early stages of development. THR reports that Hawke will play the villain opposite Oscar Isaac, who has reportedly signed on to play the titular Moon Knight character. Filming is set to begin in Budapest in March.

The character was created by writer Doug Moench and artists Don Perlin, and he first appeared in 1975. Interestingly, Moon Knight has been compared to Batman because both characters are millionaires who fight crime. Moon Knight, whose alter ego Marc Spector, is rescued before his death by the Egyptian god Khonshu, who makes him an offer to save his life.

Unlike Batman’s Bruce Wayne, though, Marc Spector has established different identities and as a result is considered in some incarnations to have dissociative identity disorder. Given Isaac’s tremendous range as an actor, bringing Moon Knight to life will be fun to see.

Moon Knight’s main adversary is his former boss and mercenary, Raoul Bushman, whose greed gets into the way of his good judgement as soon as treasure gets into the mix.

This will be Ethan Hawke’s first foray into the superhero genre, though he’s no stranger to major franchises, having appeared in The Purge and Sinister. Oscar nominated Hawke joins a long list of celebrities who are attaching themselves to Marvel properties, a clear indication that Marvel projects are highly sought after. Not only are they lucrative, but they have a great deal of stability that other roles can’t offer.

Moon Knight has no release date as of this writing.
