A longtime friendship takes center stage in the trailer for the new Netflix drama Firefly Lane

Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke are no strangers to television. Both have starred in a number of network hits, including Grey’s Anatomy and Roseanne, respectively. Now, they’re teaming up for a new Netflix original series, Firefly Lane, based on a novel by Kristin Hannah. The trailer shows Heigl and Chalke as two lifelong friends navigating the complexities of life, family, work and love.

Heigl, who also serves as an executive producer on the project, stars as Tully, while Chalke plays Kate. The duo meet as teenagers and are inseparable. Ali Skovbye dazzles in the trailer as a young Tully, and Roan Curtis is delightful as the younger Kate.

As they grow up, their lives move in very different directions and the fallout, both positive and negative, impact their friendship as adults.

The trailer reveals Tully’s success as a broadcast journalist and Kate’s struggle to keep up; there’s a scene where she removes her wedding ring, hinting at possible marital troubles as she reminds her best friend that Tully has never failed at anything. Kate’s life has never been easy and her early years were a struggle that made it hard for her later in life.

Through it all, though, they have always supported each other and have made sure that they remain in each other’s lives no matter what happens, and that includes what happens when both friends fall for the same man later in life.

As Netflix adds upwards of 70 new original projects to its slate for 2021, shows like Firefly Lane are part and parcel of the high quality series that can be expected as Netflix develops its own properties to compete with HBO Max and other studios as the streaming wars roll on.
