The trailer for Netflix’s Malcolm & Marie promises an intense and dramatic story with two powerhouses in the spotlight.

Netflix has put an increasingly heavy focus on producing original films over the past couple of years, and the streamer doesn’t appear to be slowing down in that area. Just yesterday, the company co-hosted a screening with AFI to show off its upcoming film, Malcolm & Marie, which sees John David Washington and Zendaya playing  a filmmaker and his girlfriend as they navigate the tumultuous and unpredictable waters of being in love.

And the trailer, which also dropped yesterday, seems to underscore the tagline’s insistence that their characters are, in fact, “madly in love.” Tensions between the two are high, and viewers will find themselves getting whiplash as the footage shifts from the two having ship-worthy chemistry to the two screaming at and fighting with one another.

Emotions are high in the first look at this movie, and what more could viewers expect from two powerhouses like John David Washington and Zendaya?

Directed and written by Euphoria creator Sam Levinson, it’s probably no surprise this movie is poised to offer a raw and realistic look at romance, and if the full movie is anything like this first footage, viewers are in for a wild ride. The fact that the synopsis suggests all of this will take place over the course of one discussion makes this look even more intriguing. Luckily we won’t have long to wait until we can watch the whole thing play out.

Malcolm & Marie arrives on Netflix on February 5, one of many highly anticipated original films slated for this year. And what better way to kick off 2021 than with some stellar writing and performances? We have high hopes for this one. (Don’t let us down, Netflix.)
