The Mask of Mirrors – M.A. Carrick

M.A. Carrick – the pseudonym of writing duo Marie Brennan and Alyc Helms – drops the first installment in the massive new Rook and Rose series this January.

The Mask of Mirrors is a complex tale that follows Renata, a young con artist from a backwater town who wants nothing more than to grift her way into a noble house in the fabled City of Dreams. but in order to achieve her dreams, she’ll have to come face to face with a dangerous crime lord and the famous vigilante known as the Rook.

The novel is dense with character relationships, corrupt politics, and the dark underground of a magical city. Fair warning: This is a hefty tome – probably the longest book on this month’s list – but worth it.

The official synopsis has more details about the story.

"Renata Viraudax is a con artist who has come to the sparkling city of Nadezra — the city of dreams — with one goal: to trick her way into a noble house and secure her fortune and her sister’s future. But as she’s drawn into the elite world of House Traementis, she realizes her masquerade is just one of many surrounding her. And as corrupt magic begins to weave its way through Nadezra, the poisonous feuds of its aristocrats and the shadowy dangers of its impoverished underbelly become tangled — with Ren at their heart."

The Mask of Mirrors is available on January 19.
