How hard would Hogsmeade have been hit in 2020?
By Alex Kelly
Bars, restaurants, and stores have been hit especially hard throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. If the Wizarding World went through the same thing, how would places like Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade keep their doors open?
Most of the shops in Diagon Alley have been open for centuries, so places like Ollivander’s wouldn’t be going anywhere. But a shop like Florean Fortescue’s Ice-Cream Parlour would be hit hard, and would have to figure something out to keep his door’s open.
Another store that would be in danger would be Weasley Wizard Wheezes. Joke shops would surely not be classified as essential, and unless they embraced the technology of the 21st century, and could sell their products online, being closed for longer than a month could have meant financial disaster. It would be these types of stores who would be in the most danger.
Maybe most at risk would be the Hog’s Head, the local pub in Hogsmeade. Several bars and pubs have closed around where I live, and I would have to assume that a pub in the Wizarding World would be under similar distress. Unable to operate normally, and even closed at times by the government without warning, it would be a shame if the Hog’s Head were shuttered.
Everyone has been hit hard by the pandemic, and even with wizarding powers, I don’t believe these areas of commerce would be left untouched. It is a sad thought, and it is something that should drive us to support our real world stores, restaurants, and bars that need the help the most.
