How would Luna Lovegood have handled 2020?
By Alex Kelly
2020 has been a rough year for everyone. People have lost loved ones and sources of income. Others have been shut in their home, cut off from the outside world in fear of catching the deadly disease. It could make even the most optimistic person out there a little down. So how would one of the most optimistic people in the Potter universe, Luna Lovegood, have handled 2020?
Luna was first introduced in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and was the first person to explain to Harry what the Thestrals were, as she could see the skeletal looking beasts due to witnessing the death of her mother as a child.
But even with this unspeakable tragedy, Luna always was a kind and thoughtful character during her appearances during the last three books. She was teased by Ron and Hermione as being eccentric and having her head in the clouds, but this was not necessarily the case.
Luna’s core character trait was her unwavering belief in herself. She understood what people were saying about her, nicknaming her “Loony”, and teasing her about her appearance and the often times ridiculous things she believed in. It is this consistent trust in her own character that leads me to believe she would have prospered in 2020.
The pandemic could have taken family members and even her job from her, but I believe that Luna would have focused on the belief that she could work through it and come out better on the other side. This is not to say she would not have recognized the hardship she was facing, but she would have known that through her talent and grit it would be ok.
Luna is a character that should be looked up to in these challenging and unpredictable times. As we all try to navigate our way through the end of the year and into 2021, we must believe in the work and time and effort we’ve put in will garner something better, even if everything around us is saying we won’t. That is what Luna would have done in 2020.
What do you think Luna would have done during quarantine? What style masks would she have made? Let us know in the comments!
