Hagrid and the incredibly long break

We are now in that weird purgatory week between Christmas and New Years Eve, where there isn’t much to do and laziness has set in. While everyone settles into their post-Christmas break, what would Hagrid have done on the grounds of Hogwarts without the Golden Trio?

During the first four years of Harry’s tenure at Hogwarts, he spent his Christmas breaks at the wizarding boarding school, playing Quidditch and brewing potions that would eventually lead Hermione being turned into a creepy, Animatronic-esque cat. Harry would also have inevitably spent some time with Hagrid, keeping Fang company in the Hut, or even just walking the grounds with his favorite half-giant.

But what did Hagrid do during the events of Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince? Harry, Ron, and Hermione spent their fifth year break visiting Mr. Weasley at St. Mungo’s and then stayed at 12 Grimmauld Place, and then their sixth year break at The Burrow, leaving Hagrid with not many friends on the grounds of Hogwarts.

While he would have been caring for Grawp while Harry and his friends were seeing Mr. Weasley, this would have left Hagrid alone during the Christmas of 1996. He would have likely spent most of his time with Fang, tending to his garden, and probably removing any Christmas decorations once the New Year had arrived.

It is distressing to think that anyone might not have their closest friends and family around for the holidays, but it seems even more sad when thinking of Hagrid. Hopefully, the rest of Hogwarts that stayed behind kept him busy during this time.
