His Dark Materials season 2 episode 6: How did it compare to the books?
Whether you’re a fan of the books or not, read on to find out how the sixth episode of His Dark Materials season 2 differed from the source material.
Warning: This article contains spoilers for His Dark Materials season 2 episode 6, “Malice.”
This week’s episode of His Dark Materials at last revealed the prophecy surrounding Lyra, with the help of Mary Malone.
When we last saw Mary, she was instructed by the Cave that she would play the role of the Serpent, setting her forward on a journey. With the additional storytelling help of Fra Pavel’s alethiometer reading, the audience learned that Lyra is to play Eve in a second “Fall.”
Mary Malone’s final appearance in The Subtle Knife is as was depicted in last week’s episode–she communicates with The Cave and steps into a new world. Readers do not see her again until the third book, The Amber Spyglass, the source material for His Dark Materials‘ third season.
However, this week’s episode depicted Mary casually lounging in Cittàgazze, attempting to communicate with Dust, once more, or what she has since learned is Angels, via I Ching sticks.
As Angels gently surrounded Mary Malone in Cittàgazze, protecting her from the Spectres, we got a new insight into a special character. A former nun turned scientist, Mary’s journey is specific, one guided by both faith and questioning.
Mary is also an inherently kind person. The same traits that drove her to, at one point devote her life to the Church, are the same traits driving her on a mysterious journey to protect Will and Lyra, and even to hug Paola in the middle of Cittàgazze, a sweet and heartbreaking scene that allowed the children of the lost world a redemptive moment.
With only the season finale left and many questions to be answered, this episode set up many forces to resolve both this season and gear us toward the epic battle to take place in the third season.
