Time Magazine has announced the Person of the Year for 2020 — and it’s actually two people: Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.

Twenty-twenty has been a long and unprecedented year, but some things never change — and that includes Time Magazine‘s annual announcement about who has been named Person of the Year. It’s considered a big honor, and many people look forward to hearing who landed the title. This year, it seems two people have been named Person of the Year for 2020: President-elect Joe Biden and vice-president-elect Kamala Harris.

Given that the pair are headed to the Oval Office in January following a divisive and highly publicized — and unusual — election season, it’s perhaps no surprise that the magazine went with these two. After all, Biden’s win was celebrated in the streets around the globe, and Harris has made history by becoming the first Black, South Asian woman to take on the role of vice president.

Since being elected, Biden has attempted to spread a message of unity, something Time‘s article focused on heavily when discussing him. The president-elect explained that he’s received backlash for “saying that we had to not greet Trump with a clenched fist but with more of an open hand. That we weren’t going to respond to hate with hate.”

Still, Biden emphasized the fact that he “never came off that message.”

Meanwhile, Harris spoke of multitasking when chatting with Time, referencing the health crisis, as well as “a long overdue reckoning on racial injustice and a climate crisis,” all of which the new administration will have to contend with from the get-go. “We have to be able to multitask,” she insisted.

Despite the challenges the two will face come January, however, Biden shared a message of hope during his Person of the Year interview:

"“We’re the only country in the world that has come out of every crisis stronger than we went into the crisis. I predict we will come out of this crisis stronger than when we went in.”"

One can only hope he’s right. If he and Harris can manage to fix some of the major problems the United States is currently facing — starting with the COVID-19 pandemic — there’s no doubt they’ll prove themselves worthy of the Person of the Year title.
