The first teaser for the upcoming Doctor Who festive special reveals an exciting surprise: The return of Captain Jack Harkness!

In honor of the 57th anniversary of Doctor Who this week, BBC America released a brief teaser for the upcoming holiday special, which touts the return of a fan-favorite character: Captain Jack Harkness.

Yes, really. And thank goodness.

Though we did see John Barrowman briefly during season 12, Captain Jack only appeared in a single episode and never got the chance to interact with Jodie Whittaker’s incarnation of the Doctor. Here’s hoping that in “Revolution of the Daleks” that will change.

Although, that’s a rather tall order given that when last we saw the Thirteenth Doctor she was trapped in a high-security Judoon prison. But, that’s hardly the worst spot the former Torchwood director has gotten himself or his team out of, so perhaps it’ll be Jack to the rescue in the end after all.

The new synopsis for the episode certainly sounds promising at any rate.

"In the upcoming special titled “Revolution of the Daleks,” Captain Jack will be on hand to help the fam as they discover a disturbing plan forming involving one of the Doctor’s most feared and dangerous enemies, the Daleks. With the Thirteenth Doctor locked away in a space prison, will Captain Jack be able to help save planet Earth?"

The teaser clip clocks in at less than 30 seconds and yet somehow is still utterly satisfying.

Oh, Jack, we have missed you.

Barrowman himself seems over the moon to be back on the TARDIS again.

“Putting on Jack’s coat and setting foot back on the set of ‘Doctor Who’ was just like going back home,” Barrowman said in a statement. “It’s always thrilling to play Captain Jack. He’s a character very close to my heart who changed my life, and to know the fans love him as much as I do makes his return even sweeter. I hope everyone enjoys Jack’s heroic adventure with Thirteen.”

There’s still no official premiere date for the Doctor Who festive special, and it is as of this moment still listed as premiering “this holiday season”. But, since Chris Chibnall’s previous holiday outings have become a New Year’s Day treat, that seems to be the best guess to make here as well.

Either way, more Doctor Who is headed our way soon, and given everything else that’s happened this year, that’s certainly something to be thankful for.
