Harry Potter fans have plenty of professors to think about in the series as a whole but, for some reason, we bring up Gilderoy Lockhart a lot. Why is that a thing?

When you think of Hogwarts professors, there are quite a few that instantly pop to mind but, for some reason, Gilderoy Lockhart is someone that is brought up more often than he probably should. Harry’s Defense Against the Dark Arts professor in his second year, Gilderoy was a celebrity for his ability to take on the magical world.

The problem is that it was all a lie. Everything that Gilderoy did, he lied about, and he even tried to make his students forget that he wasn’t the man they thought he was but the spell backfired because he used Ron Weasley’s broken wand.

So, why do we bring him up? Part of it is probably because of Kenneth Branagh. The actor who also directs some of the most beautiful movies brought Gilderoy to life in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and brought such energy to the role that it made me like Gilderoy a bit more than I did when I read the books.

That being said, he’s still not great in any way. But part of why we bring him up is because it shows a flaw in the wizarding world and particularly in Hogwarts. They basically have an honor system. If someone wants to teach something, they can! No questions really asked.

And for a wizarding school that helps educate the future of the wizarding world…it seems questionable.

Next. Hedwig is the only character who never gave up on Harry Potter. dark
