When Harry learned of Sirius Black’s relationship to his family, he learned of how he didn’t fit in with the Black family at all. Let’s explore why he didn’t adhere to their ideas.

Harry Potter only knew his aunt and his uncle, who didn’t like having him around, so when he found out that Sirius Black was his godfather and not the man he originally thought, he was happy to have someone around who clearly cared for him. But Harry would soon learn that it wasn’t just a one-sided need.

When Harry showed up in Sirius Black’s life, it was when Sirius had no one. Everyone except for Remus thought he was responsible for the death of James and Lily and he had to live in hiding. But, unfortunately for Sirius, being alone wasn’t a new thing for him, like it wasn’t a new thing for Harry. While Harry was the “black sheep” according to the Dursleys, Sirius was the black sheep of his family as well.

The Black family hated Sirius and his dedication to the better things in the world than what his family wanted. They loved the ideas that Grindelwald and Voldemort shared when Sirius actively fought against Voldemort as a member of the Order of the Phoenix. He didn’t fit in with them and got to share that feeling of being alone with Harry.

That shared bond made them closer which is why Sirius Black’s death hurts so much. They finally were finding someone who understood. While Sirius had James, James could never understand that feeling but Harry could. He didn’t belong like Sirius didn’t and it hurts that they never got to explore that more.
