His Dark Materials season two premieres Monday on HBO Max. Here’s what you need to know to watch the continuing adventures of Lyra Silvertongue online.

Last season of His Dark Materials introduced viewers to Lyra Belacqua, a young girl living in Jordan College at Oxford, a world adjacent to our own but different. Souls live outside of human bodies in the form of talking animal companions called dæmons.

Lyra is at the center of a vast conspiracy with the Catholic Church, called the Magisterium in her world. The Magisterium believes Dust is tied to original sin, and if you cut one’s dæmon away before it settles (i.e. before the person hits puberty), you can free the person from original sin.

In the midst of these incredibly profound metaphysical and religious concepts, the story is centered on very real and grounded ideas: family, friendship, and Lyra’s own hero journey, embellished in an incredible world of armored polar bears, witches, and aeronauts.

We’ll get to catch up with all of those and more when the second season premiere arrives on HBO and HBO Max, marking the beginning of all-new adventures for Lyra and her friends.

His Dark Materials broke the format of the books in its first season, introducing viewers to characters and storylines from the series’ second book The Subtle Knife, the focus of His Dark Materials second season.

Viewers have already met Will Parry, a boy whose father has left under mysterious circumstances, forcing him to leave his mentally ill mother in order to flee Magisterium operatives to protect his father’s work. This season, Will and Lyra will meet and their destinies will collide, taking viewers into new and far flung worlds.
