Now that Johnny Depp is no longer a part of the Fantastic Beasts franchise, Mads Mikkelsen is being eyed to play Grindelwald through the rest of the series and fans are tentatively excited.
Fans of the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them series may have their Grindelwald in Mads Mikkelsen! The actor who brought Hannibal Lecter to life on the hit show Hannibal is possibly in talks for the role.
According to the Guardian, Mikkelsen is one of the first choices of actors to take on Grindelwald and it’s upsetting because this is the Grindelwald I would have love to see. But I just know that I, personally, cannot give this movie money knowing that J.K. Rowling will directly benefit from it.
Now here’s the thing: We’re tentatively excited because Rowling is still attached. Rowling benefits from these movies and makes money and that’s not what many fans (including myself) want to contribute to. So while Mads Mikkelsen in any other world would be exciting, it also comes with the knowledge that this is still something that J.K. Rowling benefits from.
So, it’s a bit complicated.
But this casting is a step in the right direction because it means that Warner Bros. is listening to fans and their complaints. Right now, it doesn’t look like they’re separating themselves from Rowling though and that’s a problem.
How does this play out for the Fantastic Beasts series? Who knows and they’re going to have to do a lot to fix the mistakes of the previous film but we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
