Why we can still like A Very Potter Musical and the subsequent musicals
For many fans of the Harry Potter series, we don’t want to give money to something that benefits J.K. Rowling so here is why you can still love the Starkid musicals!
J.K. Rowling has made fans of the Harry Potter series make a choice: Support her and her transphobic rhetoric or forget the series all together. But there is a silver-lining: A Very Potter Musical! The musical created by Starkid takes a look at the series as a whole and combines multiple storylines from the world of Harry Potter together in three different musicals.
But what’s great about it is that it shows our love of the series but doesn’t give anything back to J.K. Rowling. For many, our goal is to show that we don’t support Rowling’s stance and don’t want to give her our money and love. That means not giving money directly to the Harry Potter series.
The good thing about AVPM is that it was a college creation that doesn’t have a connection back to the actual series other than getting away with using the character names and storylines. It’s also all fan-created, which is what fans should be looking to right now. It’s hard, we get it. This series means a lot to so many but we have to stand by and support those in the trans community who were hurt by Rowling’s words.
That’s what this series taught us after all, to be there for each other and so that means maybe not giving money directly to the series. But A Very Potter Musical works and is available on YouTube so we can sing out our feelings.
