American Horror Story: Hotel

The first season without reigning AHS grand dame Jessica Lange, Hotel was something of an experimental reboot. It was lush and glamourous in a way previous seasons had not been, and though its biggest twist involving the Ten Commandments killer was easily predictable, that’s not the same thing as being bad.

Hotel stars Lady Gaga as what is essentially an immortal Hollywood vampire, who rules over a hotel full of ghosts and dark creatures that span everything from a sadistic serial murderer in the vein of H.H. Holmes to a ghost junkie and a demon that basically sexed people to death.

As I said, it was a weird season.

Thematically and tonally all over the place, Hotel is one of those seasons you’ll probably either hate or love. Bright spots include an appearance by Gabourey Sidibe as Queenie from Coven, and a best-in-the-series-to-date performance from Denis O’Hare, whose incredible Liz Taylor is one of the best characters this show has ever created.
