Ready Player Two – Ernest Cline

The highly-anticipated sequel to Ernest Cline’s megapopular sci-fi novel Ready Player One finally arrives this month. And though some readers (i.e. yours truly) may wonder whether is a need to continue the story that feels like it was pretty definitively wrapped up in the first book, this novel aims to convince us otherwise.

At the end of Ready Player One, Wade Watts solved all the clues left behind by the Willy Wonka-esque creator of the virtual reality world known as OASIS and took over ownership after a global competition. Now, it appears that James Halliday has one last surprise for Wade — and the world. A new piece of groundbreaking technology, and a new quest to track down a mysterious prize.

The official synopsis has a bit more detail on what the sequel will be like.

"An unexpected quest. Two worlds at stake. Are you ready? Days after Oasis founder James Halliday’s contest, Wade Watts makes a discovery that changes everything. Hidden within Halliday’s vault, waiting for his heir to find, lies a technological advancement that will once again change the world and make the Oasis a thousand times more wondrous, and addictive, than even Wade dreamed possible. With it comes a new riddle and a new quest. A last Easter egg from Halliday, hinting at a mysterious prize. And an unexpected, impossibly powerful, and dangerous new rival awaits, one who will kill millions to get what he wants. Wade’s life and the future of the Oasis are again at stake, but this time the fate of humanity also hangs in the balance."

Ready Player Two is available on November 24.
