Saying that you never liked the Harry Potter series was always annoying but saying it now just makes you seem like someone who is gloating for no reason and it’s mean.

For years, fans of the Harry Potter series had to listen to people who thought it made them special that they just never got into it. It’s fine to not like something but holding that over the head of someone who does never really sat right with me.

But now, it’s definitely worse. For fans of this series, it’s hard because something we loved has been tarnished by its creator for her harmful views. And having people turn around and say “well, I’ve never liked it” doesn’t send the message you think it does.

People are upset, they are thinking about this series different and how people are hurting because of what Rowling has said. Especially those fans from the LGBTQ+ and especially the trans community. So saying “well I never cared about it” doesn’t send a message of “wow this series is bad” but instead sends a message of “well, you shouldn’t have liked it either” and that’s not the point.

It’s also just an old and outdated way of thinking about these things because like okay, great, you don’t care about something? That makes you so cool and hip. Instead of recognizing that people can like different things, it just makes you sound like you do not give a crap about anyone other than being right about something.

So if you don’t like this series? That’s fine. But gloating about it isn’t something that’s cute or fun. It’s annoying.
