The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue – V.E. Schwab

Technically, megapopular author V.E. Schwab’s latest novel may be more correctly categorized as adult fiction rather than YA, but given how many regular readers of this genre will be devouring this novel the second it hits shelves, it feels like it belongs on this list anyway. We make our own rules here at Culturess, folks.

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue is a story with a premise that seems fairly simple at first glance. A young girl doesn’t want to spend her life trapped in an unwanted marriage, in a small town – in a small life. So she makes a deal – she’ll live forever, but because she didn’t want to belong to anyone, she’ll belong to no one. She’ll be forgotten by everyone she meets.

Thus begins the story of the life of Adeline “Addie” LaRue, who spends the next 300 years living in virtual isolation, as the story crosses multiple timelines and continents from the early 1700s to New York City in 2014. Until Addie meets a boy named Henry – who can remember who she is. Why? You’ll have to dig in to find out.

The official synopsis describes the story as follows.

"France, 1714: in a moment of desperation, a young woman makes a Faustian bargain to live forever and is cursed to be forgotten by everyone she meets. Thus begins the extraordinary life of Addie LaRue, and a dazzling adventure that will play out across centuries and continents, across history and art, as a young woman learns how far she will go to leave her mark on the world. But everything changes when, after nearly 300 years, Addie stumbles across a young man in a hidden bookstore and he remembers her name."

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue is available on October 6.
