There are moments where actors should stand up for their beliefs and, frankly, Eddie Redmayne shouldn’t be both sides about this J.K. Rowling issue. Not with his history.

Talking with the Daily Mail recently, Eddie Redmayne talked about how he thought people on the internet were being too harsh on J.K. Rowling. You know, the author who constantly shared transphobic tweets and wrote a 3,000+ word essay about the community that Eddie Redmayne used to get himself an Oscar nomination for The Danish Girl.

The problem with “defending” how people are treating Rowling online comes from one simple fact: Her stance on the trans community is toxic and dangerous to the trans community. So when Redmayne also talked about how the aggressions towards the community are also “equally disgusting”, he seems to have forgotten that one of the biggest aggressors currently is Rowling.

It isn’t whether or not Eddie Redmayne was saying it because someone asked him or whether he knew he was still working with her. None of that matters. What does matters is that this isn’t a time when you can both sides the issue. You cannot see Rowling’s viewpoint, that ship has sailed when she’s shown time and time again that she doesn’t care who she hurts in what she says.

And Eddie Redmayne, who rightfully got a lot of backlash for his portrayal of transgender painter Lili Elbe in The Danish Girl, is, frankly, the last person who should be speaking up in her defense. To each their own and if people want to continue to work and support J.K. Rowling, then that is on them and their conscious.

But you cannot have it both sides. Not when Rowling is the one who is constantly talking about this. So yes, Eddie Redmayne doesn’t agree with Rowling’s viewpoints but not understanding the “vitriol” online because of her words is also very telling.
