5 questions we have about Nick Fury’s upcoming Disney+ series
If you’ve been wanting to see more of Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury in the MCU, you’re in luck: He’s getting his own Disney+ series.
There are so many characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that deserve more screen time, and Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury is at the top of the list. Introduced way back when Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk were the biggest superhero movies on the scene, Fury has made appearances throughout the Infinity Saga, originally as the director of SHIELD and then as a private operative.
In fact, as far as the Avengers team has come over the past few films, the heroes have Fury to thank for bringing them all together. And with the original Avengers saying their farewells to the film universe, it may be the perfect time to bring Fury’s character back into the fold.
Apparently, the powers that be over at Marvel Studios agree because a Nick Fury series is in the works for Disney+ — and yes, Jackson will be reprising the role. Outside of that, fans don’t know much about what the show will cover or how long it will last. So, here are some questions we have about Fury’s upcoming adventure.
Where in the Timeline Does It Occur?
It seems certain that Fury’s series will take place during the current-day timeline of the MCU, but given that details about the show have yet to be released, the question is still worth asking. Fans got a look at a much younger Fury back in Captain Marvel, and it would no doubt be interesting to explore his early days forming SHIELD a bit more. (Perhaps we’ll at least get some flashbacks because you know we’d love to see the Flerken again.)

Fury’s appearances were also sparse during the later films in the Infinity Saga, so it could be interesting to pick up somewhere alongside Avengers: Infinity War or Avengers: Endgame. Again, it’s more likely anything from this time period will be shown as a flashback — because, after that post-credits scene from Spider-Man: Far From Home, the present-day Fury has some serious explaining to do.
Will That Far From Home Twist Be Addressed?
Fans last caught up with Fury in Spider-Man: Far From Home, where he did his best to convince Tom Holland’s Peter Parker to take up the mantle of Tony Stark’s legacy. The end of the film had a twist in store for viewers, though — one that revealed the Fury we’d been watching the whole time was actually a Skrull impersonating him. Evidently, the real Fury is in space somewhere and working with the Skrulls — to what end, we don’t know.
Assuming Fury’s series does occur after the events of the Infinity Saga, the episodes will need to explore what Fury’s up to in space — and how it ties into the other stories that will be introduced during Phase 4 of the MCU. Speaking of…
How Will It Tie Into the MCU’s Future?
Given that the new series heading to Disney+ are all going to tie into the greater MCU somehow, it’s unlikely Fury’s show will be an exception. How this story will impact everything else going on in the franchise remains to be seen, but it is convenient that Fury should appear again now that the Avengers team needs new leadership and new members.
Could Fury help bring our new characters together now that Captain America and Iron Man have departed? Or is he busy dealing with a bigger threat out in space somewhere?
Will Any Other Characters Make Appearances?
If Fury’s Disney+ series does decide to have Fury unite some of the “new Avengers,” it’s possible fans will see cameos during the upcoming episodes. Fury already has an established relationship with Captain Marvel and Spider-Man, so having either of them show up during the series would be fun. (And Captain Marvel would have no problem reaching wherever Fury is in space.)
It could be equally as fun to have new characters introduced and then elaborated on in later MCU films and shows. And, of course, there’s always the possibility that someone from Agents of SHIELD could cameo, given Fury’s relationship to the group (and their affinity for space travel).
Could This Lead to a SHIELD Spin-Off?
Nick Fury got his beginnings leading SHIELD, and the announcement about his new series comes right after Agents of SHIELD finished its seven-season run. Fans have speculated about whether some of the show’s characters could return in an Agents of SWORD spin-off — and given Fury’s former connection to the group, one has to wonder if this could be a way of steadily introducing that.
Some have also theorized that Fury’s show could be the spin-off we’ve been waiting for. Unfortunately, we’ll need to wait until Marvel Studios reveals more about its plot to know for sure.
