In a hilarious bit on her new show, Amber Ruffin made a reference to the Harry Potter series but also made sure to counteract it with a callout to J.K. Rowling.

The Amber Ruffin Show is a wonderfully fun new show on Peacock where host Amber Ruffin talks about the issues we’re facing in the United States and more. In one segment, she talks about spoilers and how there are certain things we shouldn’t have “spoiler alerts” on anymore. Which, she makes a great point about how we’re all stuck inside so there shouldn’t be a “spoiler” warning on everything. You’re sitting in your house, why aren’t you caught up?

But Ruffin goes on to talk about how the spoiler alerts for the Harry Potter series have basically been used up since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows came out 13 years ago. She also made sure to make a jab at J.K. Rowling, saying that the author is transphobic.

And honestly? Maybe that’s how we can keep making references to the series without having to figure out a new way of addressing the series like we want to. We counterbalance it by pointing out that we don’t agree with Rowling’s anti-trans rhetoric she shares online. It was also awesome of Amber Ruffin to do this because so many just either make jokes about Harry Potter and that’s that without really looking at the problems currently happening in the franchise.

Amber Ruffin’s entire show is an interesting and enlightening watch and something we should all be taking in. She’s bringing us the issues coming up in this world and making sure we know how hard it is out there.
