Amazon Prime Video’s Sound of Metal trailer shows Riz Ahmed as a drummer coping with hearing loss
Riz Ahmed plays Ruben, a punk-metal drummer whose life is turned upside down once he begins losing his hearing, in the first trailer for Sound of Metal.
After premiering to rave reviews at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) last year, the upcoming drama Sound of Metal, starring Riz Ahmed, finally got a first trailer ahead of its release on Amazon Prime Video. The film’s official synopsis promises an intense, deeply personal drama:
"“During a series of adrenaline-fueled one-night gigs, itinerant punk-metal drummer Ruben (Riz Ahmed) begins to experience intermittent hearing loss. When a specialist tells him his condition will rapidly worsen, he thinks his music career — and with it his life — is over.”"
With the sudden hearing loss drastically changing his entire life, Ruben and his girlfriend/bandmate Lou (Olivia Cooke) check him into a sober house for the deaf in an attempt to help him cope with his new life. But Ruben eventually has to make a choice as to whether or not he wants to make peace with the way things are, or fight to return to how his life once was.

In addition to the stunning trailer and widespread praise at the festival circuit, Ahmed’s commitment to the role is another promising sign: The actor learned ASL (American Sign Language) and took six months’ worth of drumming lessons to fully immerse himself in the role.
The directorial debut of newcomer Darius Marder, the film makes use of innovative sound design to provide a visceral viewing experience — and surely unmissable, at that. Sound of Metal promises to be one of the year’s best films, and although the state of this year’s awards season is still a little fuzzy due to the public health crisis, we don’t doubt that the film (and both Ahmed and Marder) could be serious contenders to watch out for this year.
