No, you shouldn’t be reading J.K. Rowling’s work now more than ever
J.K. Rowling has been in the news over and over again and with her latest novel, “Troubled Blood”, many don’t want to read it for multiple reasons and you don’t have to.
Right now, many fans of the Harry Potter series don’t want to support J.K. Rowling in any way. Whether it is giving her money in any form or talking about her, no one wants to give Rowling the attention she so desperately clearly longs for.
In an opinion piece published by The Washington Post, the author suggests that fans should read Rowling’s latest Robert Galbraith novel titled Troubled Blood to form their own interpretation of what the “male serial killer in a dress” actually means.
And here’s the thing: You totally do not need to read this to feel as if this is just another example of Rowling’s warped and dangerous viewpoints. The main argument is that the novel isn’t mocking the transgender community and while that may be the case, Rowling has consistently said harmful things in the past (and constantly on Twitter) about the trans community so many don’t want to support her in general. And a novel about a serial killer who is a man in a dress isn’t exactly helping.
So, do you have to read the novel in order to make a statement on it? No. You can choose not to. That’s within your rights. I’ll not be reading it or giving Rowling any more money. But the idea of telling fans to read the book and make their own mind up when Rowling’s views have been loud and clear? I’d rather not read the book at all, thanks.
