Need some help deciding what to read this month? We run down 14 of the best new science fiction and fantasy book releases hitting shelves this September.

Unfortunately, this September is going to look a lot different than most of us probably dreamed of at the height of summer. Instead of back-to-school shopping, the excitement of football season and the promise of pumpkin spice lattes, most of us are still staying home, social distancing and figuring out how to balance our professional and personal lives remotely.

This is a good thing, by the way – and it’s exactly what we should be doing, as the coronavirus pandemic continues to rage across much of the country. But it’s certainly not how we planned to to kick off the autumn.

Thankfully, there’s one small bright spot, and that’s the fact that there are a ton of great new science fiction and fantasy books hitting shelves this September. From highly anticipated sequels from Katy Rose Pool, Cassandra Clare, and Roshani Chokshi to long-awaited new efforts from mega popular authors like Christopher Paolini and Susanna Clarke, big-name titles will be showing up on shelves every week throughout the month.

Those not enough for you? New series are arriving from Naomi Novik, Adrienne Young, the duo of Meagan Spooner and Amie Kaufman. There’s truly something for everyone, and not a moment too late, if you ask me.

Here are our picks for 14 must-read sci-fi and fantasy books headed your way in September.
