As it currently stands, J.K. Rowling still very much controls the Harry Potter series but maybe it’s time fans get to tell these stories in the way that Star Wars gave it away.

The Harry Potter series has gone from a beloved aspect of our childhood to something that we now have to grapple with and it is all to do with J.K. Rowling. While we are not pushing the terrible things she continues to say on the site, it is important to note that her harmful rhetoric has made it so that it is hard to write about the series without feeling guilty.

But, much like when the Star Wars franchise seemed stagnant, it was given to fans. This situation is obviously a bit different but the fact remains: Maybe it’s time for fans to have the series and create in this world that isn’t directly connected back to Rowling.

Sure, that would probably fuel her fire for this “cancel culture” idea she has but at this point, the series is tainted and it either means we leave it behind or fans get to create and take the joy back that was taken from Rowling’s tweets.

Trans creatives could have an opportunity to create in this space and tell stories and it should be given to someone else. Or we don’t go and actively support her new work. It’s sadly where we’re at at this point because it seems like everything settles down and then suddenly, J.K. Rowling is back on Twitter sharing something harmful.

And maybe giving the series to fans would be a good way of saving it.
