Harry Potter fans go back and forth on how we talk about the series now that J.K. Rowling has tainted it for many of us and we do need to address how we go forward from here.

The Harry Potter series has gone through a major change in the sense that we can’t really talk about it in the same way we used to. The series itself didn’t change but there is a new reality when it comes to bringing it up. And that’s all because of J.K. Rowling.

She has basically made it so that fans are forced into a conversation about the fandom and how we view the series because of her own views and, to be honest, we have to change the way we talk about it. We can’t just act as if no one wrote the series. J.K. Rowling did and her words are incredibly hurtful to the trans community.

So what does that mean for fans? It means that we have to address it. We have to point out that her words are harmful and take responsibility for how it reflects back on us. Saying we still love the series while not addressing why her tweets are dangerous? That’s not really okay.

And that’s not our fault, it’s just the new way we have to navigate talking about the series and adjust to make sure our views are known and heard outside of everything else. So, how do we do that? That’s what we’re all going to have to figure out as fans going forward if we want to talk about the series at all.
