Matt Reeves’ The Batman is setting itself up to become one of the most-anticipated DC films yet. What did we learn about it at DC FanDome?

The world let out a sigh of exasperation when it was revealed that another Batman story was coming our way. After all, we’ve had Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy and Ben Affleck’s rendition of the character fairly recently — and DC Comics does have other heroes to make DCEU movies about!

That said, Matt Reeves’ The Batman has done everything in its power to build the hype surrounding the film (and take it from a skeptic: it’s working). Robert Pattinson’s take on the character may become one of the most interesting yet — and that’s not to mention how exciting it will be to see Zoë Kravitz tackle Catwoman.

We’ll admit we may have judged this movie too soon — and that we’re actually looking forward to the day it finally hits theaters. The first teaser trailer, which was unveiled at DC FanDome this weekend, has only increased our excitement about the upcoming film.

So, what else did we learn about The Batman from its teaser and DC FanDome panel?

It’s Not an Origin Story

If you were worried about The Batman rehashing the same origin story nearly every other Batman film has tackled already, you’re in luck: Reeves confirmed during DC FanDome that his take on Batman will follow the hero two years into his career. We won’t need to watch as the Waynes are senselessly murdered or see Batman come into his new role; instead, fans will get to see him as an already-established hero. It’s refreshing to say the least.

The Villains Are Getting Origin Stories

Batman himself may not be getting an origin story in The Batman, but it seems that the film will serve as a backstory for the three major villains set to appear: The Riddler, Penguin, and Catwoman. According to Reeves, their characters aren’t entirely established as villains when the film opens, a shocking development given how dastardly the Riddler seems throughout the trailer.

It’ll be interesting to see what leads these characters down the path of wrongdoing, and perhaps set us up for a sequel. (We can dream, right?)

Gotham Is Very Confused

Most renditions of Batman’s story portray him as Gotham’s savior, even if a few select individuals aren’t happy about the caped crusader traipsing around fighting crime. According to Reeves, this won’t be the case during The Batman. In fact, Gotham doesn’t know how to feel about its new hero — and many are afraid of the guy.

We suppose if someone showed up IRL to fight crime in a batsuit, we’d also be a little freaked out by the situation. Reeves’ perspective makes sense here, and it’ll be interesting to see how it factors into his Batman’s story.

Robert Pattinson Looks Fantastic

Okay, it really isn’t new information that Pattinson is going to make a stellar-looking Batman, but the teaser really drives that point home. DC fans have already taken to the internet to obsess over the actor’s emo-looking take on the classic DC hero, and we can’t deny we love a crime-fighting superhero in eyeliner.

Fans Are in for a Surprise Ending

Speaking of Pattinson, the lead actor also teased a surprise at the end of the movie — a cruel comment considering how long we’ll have to wait to actually watch the film. Could we be getting a sequel? (Please say yes.) A crazy, unexpected twist?

Well, at least now DCEU fans have something to obsess over until The Batman hits theaters in 2021.
