Director James Gunn and the cast of the Suicide Squad 2 shared some updates about the film during their DC FanDome panel — including who’s playing who.

The first Suicide Squad film was met with mixed reactions from critics when it hit theaters back in 2016. But director James Gunn and an almost entirely new cast have been working on the sequel, which they finished filming back in February. And although the film isn’t slated to hit theaters until 2021, Gunn and the cast members presented at DC FanDome this weekend, hyping up the second installment, which is already starting to sound better than the first.

Gunn opened the panel by answering fan questions, much like the other presenters throughout the day. He offered some interesting tidbits about the film, including which character he enjoyed writing the most.

Sadly, Suicide Squad 2 wasn’t far along enough to bring out a trailer — but Gunn did show off a video revealing which characters would be returning, and which characters the newcomers in this film would be playing.

Here are three things we learned about Suicide Squad 2 at DC FanDome.

James Gunn Was Most Excited to Write Harley Quinn

As a longtime fan of DC Comics, Gunn expressed how excited he was to helm a DCEU film — particularly one that focuses on the Suicide Squad. But when asked which character he had the most fun writing, he responded with Harley Quinn. A fan-favorite character for many, Harley is unpredictable and constantly shifting gears — and that’s part of why Gunn enjoys writing her so much.

“She takes you places you don’t know you’re going to go,” he explained, suggesting that her character does some of the work for him. And Margot Robbie’s stunning portrayal of Harley likely only makes things easier.

Gunn Thought About Adding Bat-Mite

If you were wondering who Gunn’s favorite DCEU villain is, you won’t actually find them in his film. Gunn revealed that he actually liked Bat-Mite the best growing up — so much so that he did consider adding him to the mix when he first began working on the Suicide Squad sequel.

That would have been a hilariously unique addition to this cast, but unfortunately, Gunn decided not to go through with it. However, there are quite a few fun DC characters in this sequel’s lineup. Speaking of…

Who’s Playing Who

Like we mentioned, Gunn brought out the big guns when he introduced everyone starring in his sequel film with a video detailing which characters each actor and actress is playing.

Watch that video here:

As far as returning cast members go, Viola Davis is back as Amanda Waller, Margot Robbie is returning as Harley Quinn, and Jai Courtney and Joel Kinnaman are reprising their roles as Captain Boomerang and Rick Flagg, respectively. Among the newcomers are Michael Rooker as Savant, Flula Borg as Javelin, David Dastmalchian as Polka Dot Man, Idris Elba as Bloodsport, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher, Maryling Ng as Mongal, Alice Braga as Sulsoria, Pete Davidson as Blackguard, Peter Capaldi as The Thinker, and more.

It’s quite the huge lineup, and it has fans pumped to see how these characters turn out onscreen.

Luckily, we won’t have too long to wait until we get to see this gang of villains in theaters. Suicide Squad 2 is currently set to arrive on August 6 — and after its DC FanDome present, we really can’t wait.
