When it comes to characters we know and love, Minerva McGonagall is high up on the list. So why is she the character that people have such a hard time talking about correctly?

Minerva McGonagall is the best for a lot of reasons. She’s strong, she cares, and she’s an incredible witch that many of us looked up to growing up. So why is it so hard for the actual series to give her the credit she deserves?

Think about it. She showed up in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and they couldn’t even get her age right. The movies were wonderful to her in the original run but that’s because of Maggie Smith. If anyone else would have played her, she might not have come across as strong and as important because the movies didn’t really write her that way. That’s just Maggie Smith and her brilliance.

Then, Pottermore gave us more information on McGonagall’s family that the movies also continued to throw out and recreate for whatever reason. So, why McGonagall is so complicated comes from the fact that she’s just never written the same way.

Fans can look at the series and this character and figure out who she is and why we love her but she just never seems consistent with the rest of the series and it’s interesting because it shouldn’t be that hard.  Especially when she’s as important as she is.

So maybe that’s why when many of us think of McGonagall, we think about how much she’s changed and want some kind of consistent story.
