As part one of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child ends, you’re ushered into Voldemort Day. So why is it still so scary for fans of the series to hear that celebration?

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is split into two parts and while the time gets wobbly and things changed, one thing is for certain: Voldemort Day is absolutely terrifying. As you finish up Part One, something happens in the story that changes things and leads to there being a celebration of Lord Voldemort.

While we all know of the monster that Lord Voldemort was, it bleeds into that fear that still exists about him. Because the idea of a “Voldemort Day” happening and people celebrating the Dark Lord because he won feels like the series we watched and loved all ended up being for nothing.

Cursed Child makes some choices that people don’t agree with and that’s fine but the idea that even after all these years, Voldemort can still be someone who rules Harry’s life so completely hurts. After Deathly Hallows, we thought that he was free of the Dark Lord. But with Cursed Child, he’s right back into a life where Voldemort looms over him and that isn’t fair to Harry.

He’s constantly worrying about what Voldemort is going to do with him and his family and it hurts to see how much he struggles to just be happy. So seeing Voldemort Day play out on stage, we’re thrust into this fear of evil winning and Harry Potter never really having a moment to just be happy and that’s why it’s so terrifying.
