It’s the perfect time for Marvel to bring us an Agents of SWORD series
With Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD having ended its seven-season run, it’s the perfect time to launch an Agents of SWORD series.
Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD closed the curtains on its seven-season run, giving us an emotional and satisfying series finale.
While it’s still a miracle we managed to get seven seasons from this ratings underdog, we’re still not quite ready to say goodbye to these characters.
Which means I’m here to pitch the next best thing that should come to Disney+: Agents of SWORD.
At the end of the series finale, we got a glimpse of where our team’s at a year after defeating Nathaniel Malick and the Chronicoms. Everyone’s gone their separate ways, and the one follow-up that intrigued me the most was Daisy and Sousa.
Alongside Kora, they’re out in the depths of the universe, searching for a nebula. We only see it for a few seconds, but those few seconds put an immediate thought in my head: Agents of SWORD.
SWORD is the Sentient World Observation and Response Department, and they act as SHIELD’s space-based counterpart. They haven’t appeared yet in the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, but a reddit post shows a SWORD logo on the back of that infamous pager from the end of Avengers: Infinity War. Likewise, it looks as though SWORD will make an appearance in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision when they finally arrive.
That shouldn’t stop Marvel from letting Daisy, Sousa, and Kora from living out their space-age dreams. SWORD’s reach is across the galaxy; there shouldn’t be anything stopping them from creating a Disney+ show with Chloe Bennet and Enver Gjokaj focusing solely on the outer reaches of SWORD.
If Marvel TV is actually going to tie back into the larger MCU at this point, imagine how fantastic that show could be from the very start, rather than having to wait for the MCU to give us the big reveal.
We can see Daisy exploring the cosmos to her heart’s content, growing closer to a sister she never had before. We can watch Sousa be confounded by everything, but just rolling with it because he has to. And also why not? Why not aliens? Why not space travel? He’s already a man out of time — let’s just jump in headfirst and see it all at once.
Whether or not Marvel takes this route is completely up to them. Chloe Bennet has already expressed interest in returning as Daisy Johnson, so we can only hope they don’t pass up the opportunity.
