Why the thestrals are some of the saddest creatures in the Harry Potter series
The magic of thestrals come from their invisibility but they are also the saddest creatures in the entire Harry Potter series because of how they are seen by others.
Thestrals in the Harry Potter series are interesting because not only were they invisible until we learned of their powers but they also are incredibly sad to think about. The creatures that help bring the students of Hogwarts back to school but they are also only seen by those who have seen death.
It’s sad and it’s a terrible way to learn of these magical creatures too. Harry just assumes that they are being brought to school by nothing, that it’s just part of the magic but the thestrals appear after he, himself, sees death and it is only Harry and Luna Lovegood who can see them in that moment.
It’s what bonds them but knowing that it takes these kids seeing death in order to know that? That they have to suffer to understand the thestrals? It makes both the creatures and the circumstances incredibly sad.
Which then makes these creatures sad. So many people have no idea they exist or see them. They don’t know where they are or why they are interesting and they may never. But there are a lot of creatures in the series who deserve our attention and love and exploring more of them would be great but we just have to wait and see where the series continues to take us.
But, when talking about the thestrals, we can talk about the sadness that surrounds them as creatures and their introduction to the series.
