Keanu Reeves fans, we’re being blessed with two more John Wick sequels
Get excited, John Wick fans: It turns out there are two sequels in the works at Lionsgate.
John Wick is shaping up to become the next big action franchise, even if the fourth installment may arrive a bit later than originally anticipated. But despite not getting to see Keanu Reeves back in action until 2022, the John Wick gods have seriously blessed us: Lionsgate has already confirmed a fifth installment for the franchise, one that will be filmed back to back with John Wick 4.
Deadline reports that the news came from a Lionsgate earnings call with CEO John Feltheimer. Feltheimer exclaimed that the company is “busy preparing scripts for the next two installments” of the John Wick franchise — meaning pre-production already seems to be underway. How long we’ll need to wait between sequels remains to be seen, but if filming is happening back to back, it likely won’t be too long.
John Wick 4 was initially expected to arrive in theaters in May 2021 (on the same day as The Matrix 4, no less), but those plans were brought to a grinding halt by the COVID-19 health crisis. Keanu Reeves, who will be reprising his role as the titular character in the sequel, is currently filming the next The Matrix installment in Berlin, Germany. That film will now be released on April 1, 2022. (So much for Keanu Reeves Day, everyone.)
Plot details for John Wick 4 are sparse at the moment, but anyone who has seen the third movie can probably guess who Reeves’ character will seek vengeance against next. This guy’s always after someone — usually with good reason — and that’s unlikely to change in the upcoming installments. Outside of that, fans can expect plenty of action and surprise. (It just wouldn’t be a John Wick film without those!)
John Wick 4 is currently set to hit theaters on May 27, 2022. A spin-off television series,The Continental , is also in the works at Starz — so fans of the franchise can expect to stay well fed for quite some time.
