Harry Potter and our cultural obsession with magic
We love magic for one way or another and looking at our obsession with the Harry Potter series can help explore why we love it so much. Especially with this series.
Magic is something that every fan of the Harry Potter series can safely say we love. If not, why did you read a series about magic? But, all jokes aside, it is a great commentary of our love of the world of the unknown and how we are fascinated with magic and its origin.
In the Harry Potter series, it’s a bit different than the normal obsession with it. Typically, fans of magic are obsessed with going to magic shows and watching tricks they can’t explain. That’s not really how it works with Potter where they go to school and use their wands to explore it.
But it also isn’t really explained how magic is originated in the series or why some people have it and some don’t. It’s not really that important and it doesn’t matter but it is different from this idea of illusion.
Magic is used as a way of life. From spells to help make it easier or to fight off the darkness of the world, it’s more along the lines of the old way of thinking about witches and wizards. Overall though, it does show a common theme of how we love the idea of magic in the modern age. It wasn’t always that way, as history shows, but at least now we have this fascination with it and hopefully, that just continues.
Do I wish the magic of the Harry Potter series was real? Of course, that’d be amazing but alas, maybe it does just in secret.
