It’s been a strange time to be a fan of the Harry Potter series because we’re not sure what to do. So…is there a new kind of normal to what being a fan of this series means?

When it comes to loving the Harry Potter series now, there is a new way we have to think about it. And that’s mainly because J.K. Rowling made it difficult to just blindly love the series anymore. For so many of us, we’re torn between the love we had for it growing up and looking to what supporting Rowling actually means.

So, what is the new normal for fans of the franchise? It needs to be speaking out against Rowling’s harmful views and making sure that our love of the Boy Who Lived isn’t just unconditional anymore. Growing up, the series was something larger than life to us. Not because there wasn’t anything else to love (there was plenty) but because the series was a wonderful place to turn to.

Now, that’s tainted and we have to come to terms with it and try and adjust our way of thinking about the series. Not for ourselves but for those that Rowling’s comments harm. We can’t blindly love the Harry Potter series when Rowling is spreading harmful rhetoric online.

So, our new normal? It needs to be calling out the problems with her statements, being objective about this world we’ve loved, and we need to start supporting those fans from the LGBTQIA+ community that were hurt by Rowling’s words because that’s what the Harry Potter series taught us. Not whatever hate Rowling is sharing.

Next. Let’s give the Harry Potter series the George Lucas treatment and give it to someone else. dark
