The relationship between Severus Snape and Lily Evans is far from ideal
Severus Snape and Lily Evans were friends until their friendship fell apart and Snape lived a life of wishing he could have been with Lily but that relationship isn’t a beacon of hope…not in the slightest.
For some reason, many fans of the Harry Potter series have clung to this idea that Severus Snape is a romantic character for the way he dedicated his life and love to Lily Evans. In reality, it isn’t that great of a character choice.
Look at it this way, imagine your childhood crush decided to not talk to you anymore and then you dedicated every aspect of your life to them because you wanted to show some kind of love and loyalty to someone who rejected you. It’d be strange, right?
Well, that’s pretty much what happened with Snape and Lily. They were friends and he was extremely rude and hurtful towards her and she ended up with James Potter. In Snape’s world, he saw it as a terrible betrayal but he is the one who hurt Lily first.
From there, Snape just spent his life trying to either win Lily over or to protect what he lost at his own hand and it isn’t romantic or sweet. He was rude to her son all because he looked like James Potter and he took on so many qualities he thought Lily would have liked and it doesn’t come across as some romantic gesture to me. I think it’s extremely sad, to be honest, and Snape doesn’t really deserve a lot of praise because he did hurt Harry.
