The problematic and complicated nature of Hermione Granger’s S.P.E.W
Hermione Granger knows a lot about a lot of things but her S.P.E.W and trying to liberate the House Elves wasn’t exactly the best move for her as a character and let’s talk about why.
When it comes to ideas that never really reached their full fruition, Hermione Granger and her idea of S.P.E.W. is pretty high up there. Created to liberate the House Elves, Hermione wanted them to have their freedoms and their rights without really talking to House Elves in the first place.
Dobby is a free elf because Harry Potter releases him from the abusive control Lucius Malfoy. When Hermione learns of the servitude that House Elves are faced with, she wants to free them but doesn’t really do a great job of telling other wizards and witches about it.
On top of that, some of the elves do not want to be freed and Hermione just continues to push her ideas onto them that they do want it. The problem isn’t that she’s trying but instead that she’s doing it from a place of trying to do what’s right for someone else and not listening to them when they voice their own complaints and concerns.
Hermione is a brilliant character and she’s smart and caring but S.P.E.W. was not her finest hour. Mainly because when she did have a chance to actually do something (as she was Minister of Magic) she just…didn’t do anything about it.
So, when talking about S.P.E.W. and Hermione, we have to remember that it wasn’t exactly explored the right way and then was…basically forgotten.
