Netflix has renewed its heartwarming drama Sweet Magnolias for a second season, promising more friendship, family, and truly fabulous Southern accents.

Given all the big releases that have hit Netflix the past couple of months – Cursed! Warrior Nun!  The Babysitters Club! – you might have missed out on Sweet Magnolias, a simple, unassuming drama that is the perfect televisual comfort food for our current chaotic and uncertain lives.

But since Netflix has now renewed it for a second season, you now have no excuse not to correct that fact.

The show is based on author Sherryl Woods’ book series of the same name and follows the story of a trio of lifelong best friends in a small town in South Carolina called Serenity. Like all the best Southern stories, there are romances and heartbreaks, family triumphs and tragedies, and plenty of gorgeous settings. (Plus, I assume, sweet tea. It’s the South, after all.)

The series’ first season ended on a rather dramatic cliffhanger – a car accident in which the identity of the passenger was unknown – which means that someone somewhere was already plotting a season 2. Happily, we’ll actually get to see it – but that renewal was in no way guaranteed when the show launched.

Apparently, however, lots of people seem to be in the market for a cozy show about people supporting and caring about one another. According to Netflix’s Top Ten tracker, the show ranked in the service’s Top 10 titles within a week of its release and even claimed the top spot during the long Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Sweet Magnolias’ first season was based on the first three books in Woods’ series, out of eleven total. So there’s plenty of material still to adapt, and a fair amount of hope that this show could go on well past its second season. We’ll just have to wait and see.
