When it comes to our favorite characters, Minerva McGonagall is high up on the list but she deserved a lot more than being Dumbledore’s go-to and living in his shadow.

Minerva McGonagall was head of Gryffindor, the professor of transfiguration, and someone who many fans clung to for a multitude of reasons. The problem though is that she is often a character who is thrown in for that connection or she exists in the shadow of Albus Dumbledore. Let me explain.

McGonagall, in Crimes of Grindelwald, is thrown in as a name because it makes audiences gasp and remember the brilliance of Hogwarts. The problem there is that she wasn’t even ALIVE when that movie was set. But, that’s very much how she was crafted as a character, which is incredibly annoying as a fan of McGonagall’s.

A brilliant woman who took her job seriously and wanted to protect the students of Hogwarts while educating them, McGonagall is often shown as a stickler for rules and someone who just raises her eyebrow at Harry’s antics.

In reality, she was a warrior who fought to protect her home and those students she’d come to love as her own family, and the only time we really got to see that played out was during the Battle of Hogwarts.

She deserved more than just being a character that would help Dumbledore when he needed and be in charge when he had to rush out. McGonagall was just as important and someone we should have to gotten to see more in the books and on-screen and that doesn’t mean that whatever the Crimes of Grindelwald is doing with her cuts it.
