Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD season 7 episode 9 review: Time after time
Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD runs us through the same time loop over and over again. But someone’s sabotaging their attempts to escape before it’s too late
Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD takes on Groundhog Day in this week’s episode. Let’s dive right in and see how things unfold.
Daisy wakes up into chaos. Deke lets them know they’re trapped in a time storm; they jumped within a jump and if they get sucked into the black hole of the thing, they’ll cease to exist.
Radiation flares cause Mack to go blind and get burned. There’s fires popping up everywhere. Elena gets stuck in the quinjet, and they jump again.
And it starts over. Everything rings familiar to Daisy. She calls the shots, confuses everyone. And it starts over again. She quickly tells May and Mack what to do and starts up Coulson. “How long did it take you to figure it out this time?” He asks upon reboot. “If you forgot everything we went through, it must mean you died again.”
Each loop resets them, but they keep getting closer to the vortex. They need to solve it faster, and finally, Deke winds up spilling the truth about Simmons. Take out DIANA and figure out where Fitz is because he will know the answer. Except there’s gas. Deliberate cuts to a gas line to murder Daisy and Simmons before they can take out DIANA.
And we start all over from square one. We’re down to 41 kilometers from the vortex. Their suspects initially are mainly Deke and Enoch. Next order of business? Using Elena to take the implant out of Simmons quickly.
Another issue? The scanner’s drawer has been tampered with. Someone’s trying to kill Simmons.
Coulson has a meltdown in the middle of the episode. He’s sick of watching his team die and he has no idea if he has a soul and what is this if not a metaphor for his new existence? Clark Gregg does so well with these emotional beats.
He also figures out that it’s Enoch. Simmons programmed him to protect her and her secret, even if it means killing everyone on board.
They use a couple more time loops to figure out how to get Enoch out of the equation, including using Sousa to distract him by asking what time dinner is with the crew. And also the entire crew. Daisy also takes one loop to just sit and talk with Sousa. And not the one where they kiss!
The fix? Enoch’s heart.
He just straight-up rips it out of him and offers it to them. “I would like to think Fitz would do the same for me,” he says. Daisy and Coulson stay with Enoch as he dies. Coulson even gives a pep talk about death!
Enoch has seen the future—this will be the team’s last mission together.
Post-Credits Stinger
We’re back to emo Magneto and the new Brotherhood of Mutants, training Daisy’s older sister to use her Havoc-esque powers.
Badass Moment of the Week
Let’s go with Sousa sacrificing himself in one of the time loops—the one where Enoch messes with Deke’s drawer of stuff.
Best One-Liner
“I’ve been thinking about it like a record skipping. Every time I say that you give me the same look. Vinyl’s back! You’re supposed to know records again!” Coulson says, exasperated. I agree Coulson! My vinyl collection also agrees with you!
I really enjoyed Daisy’s heart to heart with Sousa. Him calling her out on her personality, how she’s pretty much a 21st century Peggy. And how he wants to be there to help pick her back up and let her know she’s not alone. Will they be able to be a thing now?
Enoch’s death was heartbreaking but not surprising. It’s a good pep talk for LMD!Coulson and his thoughts on his own humanity.
Also… with that gasp of Simmons’ on recalling where Fitz is… he’s dead, isn’t he?
Next week’s Agents of SHIELD will bring us back to Nathaniel Malick and the rest of the Inhumans. At least we won’t be stuck in a time loop in space anymore!
