Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD season 7 episode 7 review: Divided we fall
Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD traps Mack and Deke in 1982. But Mack’s too distraught over losing his parents. Can Deke bring him back into the SHIELD fold?
Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD trapped Mack and Deke in 1982. Let’s see how they adapt to their new situation.
In River’s End, a faulty computer prints out a bunch of alien language, and then starts talking to the electronics man. It’s Sibyl — in computer form! She’s given him blueprints to make her a new body. Yeah, she’s a full robot.
Things don’t start out well for Mack and Deke, as Mack takes off and claims the job is finished since Coulson took out the Chronicoms with his explosion. He visits his childhood self from afar, then heads off to self-isolation. Deke finds him, but Mack wants nothing to do with him.
Soon it’s 1983. All Mack’s done has been build model cars while Deke keeps trying to interact and get back in touch with him. Turns out Deke’s started his own band! The Deke Squad, who happened to write “Don’t You (Forget About Me).” The look on Mack’s face says it all.
But it’s just a cover — he’s recruited all his band mates (Roxy Glass, Tommy and Ronnie Chang, Olga Pachinko, and Cricket) to SHIELD — or some form of it. Coulson’s mind is in the computers, a la Captain America: The Winter Soldier. He found evidence that Sibyl slipped into the water supply and is attempting to build new hunters.
To show off his new team, Deke runs them through the gauntlet, which is a paintball course, but it goes poorly. Thankfully, he made a shotgun axe for Mack. Still … Mack’s not having any of it. He’s not a director. He doesn’t want any part of this.
And we get killer robots! With all the cheesy ’80s gore! It snaps Mack out of his funk and gets him back on the team, shotgun axe and all. The Deke Squad takes on the robots until the only one left is Sibyl, who’s there because the time stream thread is somewhere in the Lighthouse.
They destroy the main Sibyl robot, but one of her tiny robots gets away with another Macguffin.
The Zephyr reappears after 20 months and May and Yo-Yo arrive at the Lighthouse to rescue everyone and meet the new SHIELD team.
Post-Credits Stinger
Sibyl’s little robot treks its way through the wilderness with the mystery item and delivers it to a still-alive Nathaniel Malick. We knew we hadn’t seen the last of him, right?
Badass Moment of the Week
All of the cheesy deaths! The gore was perfect!
Best One-Liner
“That was before we knew he had a steady job!” Deke explains about Cricket’s shadiness.
”Doing what?” Mack asks.
”Selling Coke! … I’ve never seen him drink any,” admits Deke.
Honestly, I think a lot of us still sell Deke short even after all this time. He’s definitely grown up — and hearing Roxy tell Mack that Deke’s been looking after young Mack and his brother shows that he’s really trying and he really is a good guy.
I did enjoy that the episode was framed with Deke trying to explain everything to May once they’re back with the rest of SHIELD. Because of course no one would believe Deke’s story.
Next week’s Agents of SHIELD looks like we’re going back to the Inhumans and Jiaying! Oh boy, this is going to be fun for Daisy.
