The Trevor Project shared great resources with us on where you can help the trans community!
Want to know where you can donate or how you can help the transgender community as a Harry Potter fan? The Trevor Project gave us some great resources to look at!
Because it has been continually trying to navigate in a space where Harry Potter fans have to recognize and acknowledge the danger of what J.K. Rowling is continuing to push online, I decided to reach out to the Trevor Project in what I could do with Wizards and Whatnot to help.
First, the linked me to their piece on how to be an ally to transgender and non-binary youth. The guide includes:
"The difference between sex and gender, basics of gender — identity, expression, and perception, forms of address that show respect (names, pronouns, honorifics), helpful tips to increase understanding, and common mistakes and what to do if you’ve made one"
Then they told us about a wonderful resource for gender-affirming care for youth that they created as well. To help donate to the Trevor Project, you can help them reach their fundraising goal here.
As Harry Potter fans, we’re now in a unique place. For years, we turned to the series and praised it and the world that J.K. Rowling gave us but now, she continues to share harmful rhetoric online and it is important to use our platforms and where we stand, as fans, to help the community her words target.
Donating to other trans focused organizations is also important and do what you can! Want to buy something that is Harry Potter centric? Either donate that money to these organizations or share resources instead!
