The Harry Potter series was written by J.K. Rowling but, in a lot of ways, it has become something more than the world she built and so how can we separate it from her?

J.K. Rowling has continued to share transphobic and dangerous opinions online and, in doing so, has pushed many fans further and further away from her and the Harry Potter series. The problem is that so many of us are connected back to this franchise and these characters so completely that it can hurt to either not talk about it or to think about how disappointed we are.

So is there a way to completely separate the work from the artist? In a way, yes, I think there is. For example (and it is not nearly as extreme of a circumstance), there is Star Wars. George Lucas sold it to Disney and then suddenly, it wasn’t really about the world that George Lucas built anymore but the continuing of these stories separate from his work.

If we start to make Harry Potter adjacent properties with new writers and creatives, it can start to separate the world from Rowling herself. It can be something completely new and different while still holding to the characters and the franchise they came from. Much like the sequel trilogy for Star Wars.

So, there could be a time when we completely separate the series from just Rowling and her transphobic views but it definitely needs to start to happen because, otherwise, many fans will not return to the world of Harry Potter any time soon.
