Jonathan Van Ness commented on J.K. Rowling’s controversial tweets
Star of Queer Eye, Jonathan Van Ness, has made comments regarding Rowling’s controversial tweets and he isn’t putting up with her dangerous stance against the trans community.
Jonathan Van Ness (who came out as non-binary) has been a vocal advocate for the correct use of pronouns. While Van Ness has said that he is comfortable with he/him, they/their, and/or she/her pronouns, he understands the importance of getting pronouns right for each individual.
And now, he’s commenting on the harmful comments from the Harry Potter author. For many, Rowling’s transphobic rhetoric that she’s shared online multiple times over finally hit a boiling point with her blog entry essentially saying that she doesn’t think of trans women as woman.
Van Ness, on Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live has taken to pointing out why those comments are dangerous and how they are, specifically, harmful currently to the Black trans community.
"“The Black Lives Matter movement is so important and is rightly taking this moment to really draw people’s attention, but also Black trans people are extra targeted and extra marginalized. And to take this time from, you know, a platform like J.K. Rowling’s to spread this kind of transphobic vitriol and sew this kind of discord, I just think it’s so disappointing.”"
What’s wonderful is that Van Ness encouraged those watching to donate to help, much like we did here. Because really, it hurts that Rowling has made it clear she isn’t budging on this issue and so what fans can do to help is to donate and educate themselves on why Rowling’s comments are hurtful and dangerous and learn how we, as fans of the Harry Potter series, can help.
